Innovative tool helps Diabetes Liga with prevention

The Diabetes Liga informs, connects and activates everyone affected by diabetes. Every year, approximately 4,000 women in Flanders are affected by gestational diabetes. Raising awareness about the associated risks is essential, as it helps to detect and prevent the disease more quickly. With an innovative digital tool from Axians, pregnant women can easily register, allowing the Diabetes Liga to be more effective in prevention and follow-up care.

“We were looking for a way to motivate as many women with gestational diabetes as possible to take the necessary steps to prevent and detect diabetes early after delivery,” said Arnout Wouters, general director of the Diabetes Liga. “It is crucial to pay attention to the risks such as preterm labor, pre-eclampsia and excessive birth weight, which can complicate childbirth.”

Axians is proud to contribute to the noble and humane mission of the Diabetes Liga with the “Zoet Zwanger” tool. Currently, our system tracks approximately 20,000 women diagnosed with gestational diabetes. They are regularly advised to undergo screening. “The heart of ‘Zoet Zwanger’ is a Business Process Engine that tracks every communication flow, captures responses and sends automatic reminders. It facilitates interactions between women, doctors and the diabetes team,” explained Roel Vermeersch, Business Unit Manager at Axians.

With this project, the Diabetes Liga took the step towards digital communication, without losing sight of the vulnerable target groups. “Women are approached in their preferred language, which lowers barriers and is therefore a real added value. We currently offer Dutch, French and English, and we plan to add more languages in the future to increase the level of communication,” says Sabine Verstraete, project coordinator for Prevention & Zoet Zwanger at the Diabetes Liga.

The flexible BPM solution allows future process improvements to be easily implemented without complicated developments. In addition, ‘Zoet Zwanger’ provides secure communication for healthcare providers via e-Healthbox, which ensures privacy and security of patient data.

Gestational diabetes is a serious threat to the health of women and their unborn children. “More and more women are undergoing the preventive screening,” notes Arnout, “but it is essential to raise awareness among women so that they continue the screenings and receive all the education they need. In this, ‘Zoet Zwanger’ will continue to play a crucial role in the future. “
